Nissan and EVgo – Five Years of EV Infrastructure Leadership – and Counting!
When Nissan, one of the largest automakers in the world, decided to incorporate fast charging as an incentive to new car buyers, it was only natural that they should partner with EVgo, one of the nation’s largest public fast charging networks.
This ongoing partnership began in 2015, with the launch of the Nissan No Charge to Charge program. The program provided drivers who purchased or leased a new Nissan LEAF® before July 7, 2019 with two years of free fast charging at any EVgo station. At the time, EVgo and partner network stations were available in 55 markets across the continental U.S. and were accessible to 93% of LEAF owners. In 2018, the program was expanded to provide fast charging to Nissan LEAF owners living on the Hawaiian Islands of O’ahu, Maui, and Hawai’i via EVgo and Greenlots fast charging stations.
In June of 2019, EVgo and Nissan partnered on another project – an active corridor with 57 electric vehicle fast chargers spread across 26 locations between Monterey and Tahoe, CA. Dubbed DRIVEtheARC, the corridor was funded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and created in partnership with the State of California’s Governor’s Office and Economic Development, Nissan Motor Co., Nissan North American, Kanematsu, and EVgo. The project was intended to spur EV adoption in order to improve energy conservation and promote new energy technologies, as well as to help facilitate government relations and research and information exchange between the U.S. and Japan. A second corridor project between EVgo and Nissan made it more convenient for EV drivers to make the trip from Washington D.C. to Boston. The I-95 Fast Charging ARC consists of nine EVgo fast charging stations equipped with a total of 52 fast chargers.
Later that year, EVgo and Nissan announced a joint investment in the expansion of the American charging network for drivers with all makes and models of EVs. This multi-year construction program will see with the installation of 200 fast chargers across the United States. The first new chargers under this program went live in Woodland, CA on December 3, 2019 with subsequent stations in Atlanta, and Washington, DC operational shortly thereafter and additional fast chargers currently under construction. When complete, the project will be the largest installation of 100kW CHAdeMO fast chargers in the country.
November 2019 saw a new co-marketing program called Nissan Energy Perks by EVgo®. This program provides retail customers purchasing or leasing a new Nissan LEAF with a charging credit to use within the EVgo and EVgo roaming partner charging networks. In total, this program gives new LEAF and LEAF Plus owners and lessees access to over 30,000 chargers*. The partnership expanded fast-charging options for EV drivers across the country and raised awareness among U.S. EV drivers about the advantages of going electric.
With a series of successful partnerships over the last five years, EVgo looks forward to working with Nissan in the future to continue to make it as easy as possible to drive an electric vehicle in the United States.
